WHY RECYCLE
Because It Matters!
DRS recycles 98% of the material we collect and supports BUILT GREEN of Washington, and L.E.E.D. a program by the United States Green Building Council.
DRS decided it was time to “remove” drywall scrap from landfills and recycle the materials collected. If you look at the market for new homes in the U.S. over the past 10 years, you would find an average of 1,350,000 homes being built annually. These homes average 2300 square feet per house. If you factor drywall waste at 20% of the square footage, waste for one house would weigh 1.38 tons!
The potential landfill saving in the U.S. for residential buildings alone is 1,863,000 tons per year. If all of this material is recycled think of the savings the gypsum manufacturers would have and best yet, look at the material NOT going into our landfills.
How Are Materials Recycled? Drywall debris is recycled and made into paper and gypsum. The gypsum is used as fertilizer for orchards, vineyards and hay fields, to name a few. The paper is used in applications including livestock bedding, mushroom farms and potato crops.

At DRS, we believe that disposing of waste is a vitally important issue facing the construction industry. We believe that "green building" is an essential element to Better Building Practices. Utilizing recycled materials in new construction reduces costs and eliminates the majority of waste which would otherwise be added to landfills.

BuiltGreen of Washington, is a cooperative effort between
builders, contractors, municipalities, architects, and suppliers
